DRAW HAMPERS GIANT`S CAUSE

Giant`s Causeway was the biggest loser among the European brigade when the draw for the Breeders` Cup was made today.

Aidan O`Brien`s charge will have to race from the wide outside after being put into the number 14 stall in the Classic.

Most British bookmakers immediately eased the price of the Irish ace for the 10-furlong race on the dirt.

Coral are the most generous, easing Giant`s Causeway a point to 6-1.

But Ladbrokes have taken a view and leave the colt unchanged at 7-2 in their list.

Giant`s Causeway has arrived safely with O`Brien`s other Breeders` Cup challengers but was in the quarantine barn today.

He is not expected to be able to exercise on the track until Friday morning.

O`Brien, speaking before the draw was made, said: 'He seems fine after the journey and I`m looking forward to the race.

'The style of racing here should suit him and he usually relishes getting a lead.

'Giant`s Causeway has been going all season but it has always been the plan to come here if he was in one piece.

'He`s certainly a special horse - it takes something to race at the top level all year the way he has.'

The main European challengers in the Turf race, Kalanisi (drawn one) and Montjeu (four), appear to be satisfactorily berthed.

Montjeu was out of quarantine today and had his first exercise on the track accompanied by a pony.

In America all horses go to the start with a pony and John Hammond`s charge was given some practice in this procedure.

'We just took him to stretch his legs and he went 800 metres. It was to help him get to know his pony,' said Hammond`s representative Vivienne Coltman.

Some softening of the ground - it is fast at present - would aid Montjeu and hearteningly for his supporters it rained heavily for around 15 minutes this morning.

'I`m delighted to see the wet weather and just hope that it continues,' said Coltman.

'John is arriving tomorrow and we`ve come this far, so all things being equal Montjeu will run now.'

Frankie Dettori will have four rides on Saturday as he tries to wipe away the disappointment of two years ago when he blundered on Swain and threw away victory in the Classic.

He partners Fantastic Light in the Classic, Noverre in the Juvenile, Muhtathir in the Mile and Crimplene in the Distaff.

Dettori`s hopes of a fifth ride were dashed when Diktat was eliminated from the Mile and Bertolini missed the cut in the Sprint.

'I think Fantastic Light will be my best chance,' he said. 'He`s a horse you can rely on - he`s tough and honest.'
